Networking Tips for Your New City

Meeting people is hard. Networking is even harder. I don’t know about you, but networking to me can feel forced, awkward, and kind of false. It’s even harder when you’re in a brand new city and especially hard if you moved to a city where you knew no one. I wanted to share some of my new city networking tips with you today, so let’s get started!

  1. Reach out to your current network

This is an important tip because as we are all aware of the age old saying, “It’s all about who you know”. They ain’t wrong! If you know anyone in your new city, tell them what you’re looking for whether it be a job or certain types of connections, etc. People will want to help you get settled and would be more than happy to introduce you. Be sure to send your connection a thank you note though after! If you do not know anyone in your city, see if anyone in your network does!

  2. LinkedIn
This relates a bit to #2 as well, but definitely utilize this resource! I would suggest trying to reach out to people (cold email/message) whom you share some sort of connection. Whether it be your Alma mater, mutual connection, background etc. it gives the person some feeling of connection to you and they are more likely to answer!

  3. Informational Interviews
These are somewhat harder to come by because usually you’re cold emailing for these types of interviews, but it doesn’t hurt to give it a shot! Similar to above, your cold email is more likely to get a response if you have some sort of connection through Alma mater, mutual connection, etc.

  4. Bumble Bizz
Little similar to LinkedIn, but instead it’s like the Bumble dating app, swiping included. However, you will know that people on this app are there for the same reasons as you. I definitely suggest checking it out.

  5. Volunteer
I’ve met a lot of people this way. It’s a great way to get involved in your new community and it’s a great feel good endeavor. Win win win! I highly suggest the Junior League (women based) or any cause/group near and dear to your heart!

I hope you found this post helpful! Please share your tips and tricks in the comments below and let’s all help each other reach our potential. If you have any future post suggestions, do share those down below as well. Always looking for inspiration!
