How'd I Do?? - 2019 New Years Resolutions
Hello hello, another year down my friends. The end of a decade too! Can you even believe it??! I sure can’t. Just like we did last year, we are going to breakdown my 2019 resolutions and see how I did.
My 2019 goals were as follows:
Regain my financial security
Read 12 books
Career growth
Learn some new skills/creative hobbies
I like to recap at the end of the year to follow-up on my progress. Now let’s get real honest here for a minute and see how I did.
Regain my financial security
For this one, this is tough to quantify especially when you’re a perfectionist. I would say I’ve made some progress here, but I’ve also made some mistakes here. Moving here with no furniture and no job, really just wiped a lot of my finances. I also didn’t get a salaried position until 6 months after moving here, so I was paying rent and not taking in much income. However, this is something I will continue to work on until I accomplish it even though I don’t make it an official resolution for next year.
To be honest, I think I’ve been a little reckless with the shopping this year. I think that might be something I need to add to next year’s resolutions. Shopping too much is something I joke about but I didn’t really acknowledge that it was a problem. But here I am announcing it to strangers on the internet, that I may have a shopping problem and I am going to work on it. Hold me accountable next year y’all.
Read 12 books
As you may remember, I tried to complete this goal for the first time in 2018, but I wasn’t successful. In this day and age, our attention spans are shorter. If you’re like me and work in an office staring at computers all day and reading emails, then reading something is the last thing that occurs to you after a long day at work. I used to love reading. I spent one summer in sixth grade, reading 100 books for fun. It wasn’t even intentional. I just loved reading that much. I wanted to get back into it especially because it keeps your brain sharp.
I tried the 12 books or one book a month on average, this year and I was finally able to accomplish this goal. I think my problem last year was that I was trying to read books that were helpful or what everyone else considered to be great books and not what I actually wanted to read.
Career growth
Although, I didn’t get a promotion or title change this year, I still believe I got a lot of great opportunities for professional growth this year. I am not in the career path I originally planned for myself, but I am learning and honing skills that are universal to any field and will actually be helpful should I ever want to resume my original career path.
I took over some leadership opportunities, I took on some public speaking opportunities (aka my worst nightmare) both professionally and personally, I am learning more and more about marketing every day, I am working on my writing and editing skills, and learning to juggle multiple priorities coming in all different directions. #nonprofitlife
I also got to travel outside of the state for work for the first time this year, I went to Minneapolis for a work conference. Minneapolis is beautiful! I did go in the summer, but still.
Learn some new skills/creative hobbies
This year I picked up some new creative hobbies such as painting (oil and acrylic) and I really want to try watercolor eventually. Obviously I kept up with my photography habit, but I definitely want to learn as much as I can to get you guys more quality photos. I have been trying to improve my writing and editing skills for y’all as well. I’m hoping that one will help me professionally as well. If there are any creative hobbies (preferably cheaper ones than painting and photography lol) that you would really recommend, please leave them down below!
Do y’all do resolutions? If so, how’d you do? What were your resolutions for this year?
