How to Manage Moving Stress and Anxiety
I don’t know about you, but moving in general causing me major anxiety. Let alone adding the fact that I moved almost across the country, without knowing a soul, and without a job to really just top it off.
Needless to say, I was dealing with some major anxiety over leaving everything and everyone I knew on a chance and hoping that I could figure it all out on the fly. I wanted to talk a little about the topic of moving stress and/or anxiety in hopes that I could maybe help someone else live their best life and take a chance or trust in themselves.
I think deciding rather quickly that it was time to move and not giving myself much time to talk myself out of it helped me a lot, but that is not always going to be the case for everyone. Here are some of the methods I used to stay sane during this exciting, but stressful time!
Breathing
I know it sounds simple and whenever I am stressed or anxious, my best friend always reminds me to breathe. At first, I get annoyed because obviously I know how to breathe. Then when I focus on breathing and let go of everything else, it really does help. Then I get annoyed again for having to be reminded of something so simple as breathing. Love you Cayla!
Meditation
Breathing does go along with meditation, it’s a big part of meditation actually. A little while ago, I was trying out a meditation app and I definitely felt calmer during and immediately after meditating, I wasn’t exactly comparing how it helped me throughout the rest of the day though. Meditation is something you can do for 5 minutes and instantly feel better though and build up how long you do it over time.
Exercise
Not only is this something that can be used to keep you busy and distract your mind, but it is also great for getting your endorphins going. You know the age-old saying, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people don't kill their husbands. They just don't,” -Elle Woods. I highly suggest not harming your partners, and no partners were harmed during the making of this post or during my move, ha!
Exercising helps me to feel like I’m at least in control of at least one thing in life, taking care of my body and mind. Make sure to put your physical and mental health first during this process. Exercising also helps you get in shape to move all those boxes and furniture, win-win.
Staying Busy
There is nothing better for managing any kind of emotion quite like staying busy. It helps keep your mind from stressing about things you can’t control or that haven’t even happened yet and gives it something else to focus on. So I highly suggest staying as busy as possible during this process, which I’m sure you already will be anyway what with preparing for a big move!
Hot Baths
I don’t know about you, but there is nothing quite as relaxing as soaking in a hot bath. Make sure to use your best bubble bath, bath bombs, and maybe even Epsom salt to help relax your muscles!
Lush makes great bath bombs by the way. I also got a huge bag of Epsom salt off of Amazon for pretty cheap and some great natural bubble bath, which you can find here and here.
Mentality
I actually am a believer that you attract what you put out there, even if it’s not true, it can’t hurt. So try to continually envision your preferred outcome happening to you and this is even a great step to add to the meditation step. All I can say is whenever I am feeling negatively, negative thoughts and events seem to compile in my life and the opposite is also true in terms of positive thinking and positive outcomes as a result. Try it, it can’t hurt!
